What is an Interventionist?

What Does an Interventionist Do?
You may have a friend or a relative who is seriously getting deeper and deeper into drug addiction. Pretty much everyone knows that serious drug addiction can harm both the user and the people around them, even when they do not mean to cause any harm. People under the influence could undergo hallucination or paranoid delirium. Under these cases they lose all mental control and their emotional stability. Add in the effects that the drugs do to their body and they become highly agitated as well as physically active. In these cases they become physically detrimental since they tend to lean towards violence. Without even thinking they could harm their own loved ones or even total strangers. This is when you'll want the help of an interventionist. So what is an interventionist?

Most rehabilitation centers will have an interventionist working in their facility. The interventionist is not really the person who will intervene between the user and their drug substance but will mostly be as a facilitator for the family. Everyone involved in this kind of direct intervention are referred to as the interventionists in this case. The actual medical interventionist will serve for two purposes:
So long as the user is under their care in the rehabilitation center the interventionist will make sure that the user has absolutely no means of accessing their substance unless otherwise mandated by their medical team. This means they will monitor every substance, food, and daily activity that the user is involved in to ensure they never cheat the system and get a hold of the controlled or prohibited substance. They will be the mentors and facilitators for the user's friends and family members. This is specifically the case if the person is not yet going to rehab but is simply being prepared for it. In no means are the users usually notified that an interventionist has been called into the situation to teach friends and relatives on how to control his drug abuse and prohibit or at least minimize his access to the substance.

Direct and Medical Approaches to Intervention
Both of these approaches are referred to as direct intervention where the interventionist and the family members are directly the people who will intervene to prevent further drug abuse. The drug addict will not be aware of these intervening plans until he or she is instated into a drug rehabilitation center. Then there is the other method where the drug addict becomes a part of the intervention plan right from the beginning. They are given a briefing by the interventionist right from the get-go on what they will conduct to prevent the addict from getting any more drugs and causing any further harm. Since most drug addicts require a gradual stop in their intake of substances, a planned intervention becomes vital in the later stages of the addict's rehabilitation process. They need to be monitored to prevent relapses and withdrawal symptoms that cause bodily injuries or even death.

If you're loved one is knee-deep in drug abuse and you fear the inevitable physical damages that could occur later on, it is time to go to a rehabilitation center and seek the aid of a professional interventionist.
